Alumna, Employee and Colonnade Society Council Member Digs Deep
Gloria Aparicio Blackwell '92, Assistant to the Vice President for Administrative Affairs-Community Relations, and Colonnade Society Council member devotes extra time to ensure the university serves as a "bridge to the community." Fundraising is always key, she says, but programs need help developing networks within the community to sustain growth well into the future. For this reason, Gloria makes her mark on alma mater by devoting many hours to two causes that are close to her heart: the Maryland Incentive Awards program and the Riverdale Community Center project. "We're trying to fulfill the dreams of students from low-income families who have struggled," says Gloria, of the awards program. The Riverdale Community Center is a part of the Engaged University program that empowers community members and volunteers involved with bike repair, community gardening and mural projects. The university community really likes to give back, she says. "Colonnade is a good way to connect and do that." Recent Alum and Colonnade Society Member Raises Funds and Song
Rob Garner '06, Colonnade Society member, treasured his time as a member of the Maryland Marching Band so much that he made a gift to the organization through the Maryland Fund for Excellence. "As a grad student, concentrating in library science, I've stayed involved," says Rob, who is contributing—along with Colonnade Council member and university archivist Anne Turkos—to Musical Ambassadors of Maryland: A Centennial Celebration. This book celebrates the Centennial of the Mighty Sound of Maryland marching band. But Rob's commitment to music and alma mater doesn't stop with a contribution. Combining his love for orchestral music and video games, he and fellow UM musicians have grown their unique University of Maryland Gamer Student Orchestra into a 95-piece concert-style band with a 20-person chorus. Started in the fall of 2005, the ensemble arranges and plays music from video games. Rob, president and flugelhornist, has found a way to make his musical mark on Marylandthrough his generous gift and his creativity. Support your Maryland interests through the Colonnade Society.
